7 Reasons to Switch to Natural Body Care ...

Heather Sep 30, 2014

The more we learn about environmental toxins, the more reasons we have to switch to all natural body care. With chemicals that alter hormones being added to beauty products, along with animal testing concerns, more women are learning of reasons to spend their dollars on natural body care than body care that's filled with hard-to-pronounce chemicals and ingredients they don't even recognize. I realize budget is one concern, and many women find it hard to afford natural body care, but with all these reasons to switch to all natural body care, try to do what you can, when you can.

1. Reproductive Health

One of the main reasons to switch to all natural body care is due to certain chemicals affecting women's reproductive hormones. Chemicals such as parabens, sulfates, and phthalates can alter our natural hormones, as they mimic estrogen in the body. This can disrupt our natural hormones and even lead to PCOS, a metabolic hormone condition.

2. Carcinogens

Carcinogens are toxins that cause cancer and various other health issues. Many beauty products such as nail polishes contain carcinogens, such as formaldehyde and PEGs.

3. Hair Loss

Notice your hair falling out lately? It might not be your diet but it could be your beauty products. The chemicals, parfums, dyes, and other substances in beauty products can hurt more than just your internal organs: they might also be the reason you're losing those strands!

4. Dandruff

Mainstream commercial shampoos and conditioners are often recommended to treat dandruff but they may cause more of a problem than offer a long term solution. Certain chemicals can worsen dandruff and lead to yeast overgrowth, which is another cause of dandruff itself.

5. Allergies

If you have a gluten or soy allergy, along with dairy and wheat intolerances, you might want to check the ingredient list on your body care products. Whatever goes onto the skin and scalp gets absorbed in the bloodstream within 20 minutes. If an allergen enters your blood, whether through the skin or the stomach, it's going to cause an allergic reaction.

6. Weight Gain

Some chemicals have been thought to lead to weight gain and are known as "obesogens." They slow down the metabolism and may alter thyroid function that is responsible for metabolic reactions in the body. Phthlatates are one of the main "obesogens" that have been linked to weight gain and hormone disruptions.

7. Headaches

Many commercial beauty products contain parfums that can lead to headaches. If you're especially sensitive to fragrances, I recommend using plain castor oil shampoo and conditioner or liquid black soap by Dr. Bronner's brand. These are free of all chemicals, along with scents and dyes.

Do you use natural body care products? Which of these concerns led you to make the switch?
