1

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is one of the best skin benefits of chia seeds. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that combats inflammation and wrinkles. It keeps your skin supple, smooth, and soft. Chia is rich in Vitamin E and it is easily absorbed by the body.

2

Omega 3 Fats

Omega 3 fats are found in chia seeds, just like fish, but chia actually contains more omega 3 fats than salmon! All you need is 2 tbsp. of chia seeds versus 4 ounces of salmon. Omega 3 fats combat acne, wrinkles, help promote smooth skin and also even keep your hair, nails and metabolism in good shape too! Omega 3 fats are also great for depression and your hormones. Keeping your hormones healthy is so important for your skin. Any time you’re stressed, your hormones are out of balance and your skin will most likely suffer. Eating omega 3 fats helps to keep your hormones healthy, and chia is one of the best ways to do that.

3

Fiber

You may not consider fiber important for your skin, but it is! Fiber keeps your blood sugar stable and prevents surges in your insulin levels. When insulin is stable, your body and hormones work just as they should. You’re calm, collected and not starving every hour. Yet, when your insulin levels drop, you get moody, crave sugar and fat, and your skin takes a major hit through acne, redness, or just looking lifeless. To prevent insulin levels from dropping, eating fiber and healthy fats help significantly. The fiber in chia is unique compared to other sources. Chia grows up to 10 times its size once in your digestive tract. This large amount of fiber is used to keep you fuller longer and promote healthy digestion. Luckily, this type of fiber won’t upset your system like many sources of fiber can, since chia is a soluble form of fiber that is absorbed by liquid. Fiber that keeps your insulin levels low will help keep your hormones healthy, and your skin will look great as a result.

4

Zinc

Zinc is an important mineral that is thought of as a miracle anti-aging mineral. It helps fight acne too, as a major bonus. Zinc helps keep your skin looking taut and supple, while also combating inflammation. Chia is rich in zinc, just to name one of the many minerals it is abundant in.

5

Magnesium

Magnesium is by far, one of the most miraculous minerals of all. It has so many healthy benefits, and in terms of your skin, it’s important for a few reasons. First, magnesium helps regulate your blood sugar, so as mentioned above, this helps keep your hormones healthy. Secondly, magnesium ensures your nervous system works properly, which keeps anxiety at bay, also helping to prevent uneven hormone levels that can lead to bad skin. Thirdly, magnesium helps increase your energy, which helps keep your blood flowing, helping to ensure your skin looks radiant, not pale and lifeless. Chia contains more magnesium than almost all other plant foods except cacao, making it one of the best sources you can consume.

Protein

The protein in chia seeds may not seem high, but it is extremely powerful. I notice that my hair, nails and skin seem stronger, firmer and my skin just seems to be more taut with chia seeds. I credit this to the protein in chia seeds since it helps maintain collagen in the skin. Collagen is made of amino acids from protein, so getting good sources of collagen into your diet is important for great skin, hair and nails. Chia is a great source of easy-to-absorb plant protein and one I highly recommend everyone consume.

7

Potassium

Lastly, chia seeds are a rich source of potassium, like most nuts and seeds are. Potassium is an important nutrient in your diet that helps prevent bloating, puffiness and irregular heart beat that can lead to high blood pressure. This keeps your skin from looking bloated from too much salt or processed foods, and it keeps your blood pressure even so you don’t look stressed and exhausted. Any time you’re stressed, your blood pressure is all over the place. Eating foods high in potassium helps regulate your blood pressure and keep you calm and collected, which means the hormones that affect your skin will also be in tip top shape.

I love chia seeds and add them to just about anything I can think of. I stir them into salsa, yogurt, smoothies, salad dressings, put them in raw energy bars and more. There’s nothing you can’t do with chia seeds, and since they’re tasteless, they won’t affect whatever recipes you choose to add them to. Do you eat chia seeds? What’s your favorite way?
