By Alison

If you're thinking about getting a tattoo or piercing, there is plenty to think about first. 1

Have You Been Thinking about It for a Long Time?

There are many things you should never do on a whim - and body modifications are among them. There are fewer risks with piercings, but even so you need to give it careful thought. You should think about tattoos for a long time before going ahead, and choose your design very carefully. You'll be living with this tattoo permanently, so make absolutely sure you choose the right design.

2

Could It Have a Negative Impact on Your Future

While tattoos don't carry the same social stigma they once did, you should still think about what having them could mean to your future. Visible tattoos or piercings could make it difficult for you to enter some professions. Certain designs could also be a problem later on; would you be happy with your ex's name on your body if you split up?

3

What is Your Motivation

Your motivation is also something you should think about. If you're trying to shock people, that's a very stupid reason to have body modifications. Your attempt to rebel could be hanging around to haunt you long after you've matured. If you do decide to go ahead, it should be because it means something positive to you.

4

Does Your Chosen Practitioner Have Good Credentials

It's also absolutely essential to choose the right person. Always check out in detail the tattoo artist or studio you're considering. Are the premises licensed and hygienic? Does the artist have a good portfolio? Have they done lengthy training, and do they belong to a professional body? What experience do they have? All these questions are very important; never consider getting body modifications from anyone who isn't 100% professional.

5

Does It Have Meaning for You

It seems that the people who remain happy with their choices picked a design that has a lot of meaning for them. So if you've seen a design that you like on someone else, it may not be the right one for you. You're going to be living with this design a long time, so it needs to be one that has meaning for you.

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

Are There Any Doubts in Your Mind

If there are any doubts in your mind, you should not go ahead with body modifications. You might think that you really, really want that tattoo - but you should be absolutely sure that you do. Waiting a while longer won't hurt - but a hasty decision definitely will.

7

What if You Change Your Mind Later on

Also consider the possibility that you might change your mind later on. Piercings may close up, although don't take it for granted that they will - you can be left with scarring. As for tattoos, the only way to get rid of them is to have another design on top, or go through expensive, painful laser treatment.

Many people love their body modifications, but many have also come to regret their choice. So think long and hard before you go ahead!

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I'm getting my nose done. For sure.

I plan on getting some tattoos once I find an artist I like. The meaning part isn't always true. My guy just got a rose tattoo to fill in a gap in his sleeve because nothing else would flow nicely with the rest of them. It really depends on the situation.

I have had facial piercings, and I personally had to take mine out due to infections, I looked after them but my body just rejected them. I do have my tongue pierced though. I also have a tattoo and I'm going to get a second tattoo in November

I love my dog more than anything else on this planet; and I've wanted her name tattooed on my wrist for over 2 years now.

My first cat, and has roses, my second is going to be of a Pokémon, do I care what people think? No! If you don't like it, it ain't your body is it? And it's true that they don't have to have meaning, it can be something you think will look good on you!

I have several piercings, all together including ones I've taken out I've had 22. I have plans for several tattoos but they are expensive lol. You get what you pay for. But I agree with most of these except the "only if it has a meaning" thing. If you want a tattoo just because you think it's pretty, then get it. It doesn't matter if it means something to you or not. It's art. Not all art has meaning. I plan to get a couple meaningful ones, but also a few that I just think will look good on me and I loved the idea so I will get it. Most tattooed people who are covered don't have meaningful tattoos all over. They're the ones who are most happy with their tattoos. I also don't agree with the professional thing. I have several face piercings and I work in a hospital, my girlfriend has several also and is a university professor. If a job rejects you because of tattoos or piercings, unless offensive like a middle finger on your face, then at least in Canada you can sue for discrimination. Jobs are legally not allowed to not hire someone because of their hair, skin (including body mods that aren't offensive) or race. I've never had trouble finding work because of my body mods and I only know one person who does, and that's because she wants to work as a preschool teacher, and because of the economy it's only strict bosses who are hiring. And the two places she's tried have a "nothing to pull" rule so nothing gets ripped out. But other than that, nobody has trouble with jobs and body mods.

@thelma if you can, get her paw print in ink. It can be very messy, but the tattoo is much more meaningful and when she does eventually die (it happens unfortunately) you can get a new dog, without needing more names on your wrist. I've kept all my cats paw prints and my aunts dog (I watch him all the time) in ink I'm a little book, and when I can afford it I'm going to get them all tattooed in a little cluster and add more for more pets, I'm thinking of it being on my ankle or my neck, not really sure yet. But it's a cute idea without it being a name, which is usually regretted even if it's a pet.

I never would permanently change my body, but good article anyway.

My first tattoo is of

I wanted to get one of my 4th lobe piercing done in December (for school)
