1. Waxing
This is one of the most popular options on this list of hair removal methods. Waxing is great because the results are long lasting, unlike many other methods. Once you get on a regular waxing schedule with your hair removal technician, you can go 1-2 months before needing another wax appointment. The pain associated with waxing has been somewhat exaggerated. Waxing is painful at first, but only for a matter of seconds. Other than the pain, the biggest downside to waxing is that you have to let the hair grow to be about a quarter of an inch long before the hair can be successfully removed. This can be tiresome and inconvenient, especially in embarrassing areas.
2. Shaving
Shaving is probably the most common method of hair removal. Tons of women shave their legs and underarms everyday, while men shave their faces on a regular basis. Shaving is quick and inexpensive in comparison to many of the other methods on this list, but it does have some inconveniences. Shaving typically has to be done every single day to maintain smooth, hairless skin. Since razors leave a blunt tip on each hair, the stubble that grows back is spikey and uncomfortable and appears darker/fuller than it does if the hair grows back in naturally. This is why many people think shaving causes hair to grow back in thicker, although in reality it does not. Shaving can also cause ingrown hairs and razor burn that are uncomfortable and can be painful.
Frequently asked questions
3. Tweezing
Tweezing is the most inexpensive hair removal method, but it is a very tedious procedure. Due to the time it takes to tweeze, it is best to only use this method on small areas of the body such as the eyebrows. Tweezing requires you to remove one hair at a time using a pair of tweezers. Tweezers can be used over and over again, but should be cleaned thoroughly with alcohol before and after each use.
4. Depilatories
Depilatory creams are chemicals that eat away at or dissolve the hair on the surface of the skin. Simply apply the cream and let it sit as directed on the container, then wipe away the dissolved hairs. Depilatory creams, such as Nair or Veet that are available at drugstores, can be harmful if used improperly. Follow the instructions on the packaging to avoid getting chemical burns on the surface if your skin. In addition, most depilatories smell unpleasant and they do not work as well on coarser hair.
5. Sugaring
Sugaring is an ancient method of hair removal that is beginning to become more common again. Sugar, as it is called, is typically made from sugar, honey, and lemon that is heated and combined into a mixture that is applied to the area where the unwanted hair exists. The substance is then rolled across the skin, removing the hair as it is also removed. It can be a bit more painful that waxing since the substance is more slowly removed, but it is just as effective. If your skin is too sensitive to be waxed, sugaring is the option for you, as it is less abrasive on the skin.
6. Threading
Threading is another ancient method of hair removal that originated in the Middle East. This method of hair removal involves cotton thread being twisted and rolled across the skin to entangle and pluck out unwanted hair. This method is also great for those with sensitive skin, since it only pulls the hair and does not irritate the skin. It is quicker than tweezing and very precise, so it is great for shaping eyebrows. Many shopping malls have kiosks where you can have your eyebrows threaded at a reasonable cost. It is important to note that some therapists who thread place one end of the cotton thread in their mouths. Although that area of the thread does not directly touch the skin, it can be unsanitary since cotton is absorbent and can wick the saliva down the thread toward your skin. Threading can be done just as easily and effectively without the therapist placing the thread in her mouth.
7. Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is one of the best hair removal methods, in my opinion, if you have the means to afford it, as it can be pricey. This method is known to permanently reduce the amount of hair in a particular area. Lasers are directed at the area in which you want to remove unwanted hair. The lasers zap the hair's root and nutrient source (called the papilla) and destroy it. Without its nutrient source, the hair cannot grow back. Laser hair removal is a bit painful during the process, but new lasers utilize suction and other methods to reduce the pain you experience. Most technicians apply a topical anesthetic to the skin to further eliminate any pain. Laser hair removal is most effective on candidates who have light skin and dark hair, so the laser can easily differentiate between the two and target the hair.
8. Electrolysis
Electrolysis is currently known as the only method of permanent hair removal and is the most expensive method. A small needle is inserted into the hair follicle and an electric current is pushed through it, destroying the entire follicle and making it impossible for hair to regrow. People who have had electrolysis say that it feels like being repeatedly slapped with a rubber band, but most agree that it is worth the pain!
Removing unwanted hair will make you feel more confident and at ease. Choosing the best method for you will help eliminate stress and will help you save time and money. Which methods of hair removal have you tried? Which is your favorite and why would recommend it? I hope this list helps make your decision easier when it comes to choosing the best hair removal method for you!
