1

Avoid Your Allergens

Tip number one is to avoid your allergens. You’re going to have significantly less trouble if you avoid whatever is triggering your eye allergies. In most cases, the trigger is pollen. Try to avoid going outdoors on high pollen days and always shower and wash your hair when you come back inside. You know the old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

2

Try Cold Compresses

Cold compresses are your friend when you’re suffering from red eyes. They can help the swelling go down as well as soothe the irritation your eyes feel when allergies strike. There’s no fancy formula for this treatment. Simply wet a washcloth with cool water and fold it until it fits across your eyes. Lie down and let the cold compress do it’s job for 15-20 minutes.

3

Take an over-the-counter Antihistamine

Over-the-counter allergy medications can be very effective in treating allergy symptoms, including red eyes. Most allergy medications belong to a class of drugs called antihistamines. Histamine is a substance your body produces when it’s exposed to something you’re allergic to. Antihistamines help prevent histamine from being produced. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which OTC antihistamine is right for you.

4

Try Allergy Eye Drops

There are also specific eye drops that you can buy over-the-counter to help combat red eyes from allergies. Not only do they help the redness but they help treat the itching and irritation. Again, your doctor or pharmacist can advise you which medications are best for you. There are OTC options you can purchase such as Zaditor and Zyrtec Itchy Eye Drops. If those don’t work, there are other options available by prescription.

5

Wear Sunglasses when You’re Outdoors

Sunglasses can be your best friend during allergy season. Not only do they hide your red eyes but they’re a shield against the pollen. You’ll experience much less pollen getting into your eyes if you’re wearing sunglasses. This can significantly reduce the amount of allergy eye symptoms you have. Just make sure you clean your sunglasses regularly to remove the pollen from them.

Eat Foods Rich in Vitamin C and Omega-3

Foods that’re rich in vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids are very good at helping your body fight allergens. They have antihistamine properties and also work to reduce the inflammation allergies produce. Vitamin C rich foods include many fruits and veggies such as broccoli, oranges, tomatoes, strawberries and kiwi. Some examples of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids would include salmon, canola oil and walnuts. In addition to helping your allergies, these foods offer many other healthy benefits.

See Your Doctor for a Prescription

Sometimes you need to reach out to your doctor. They have other methods of treatment than you can access on your own. They could prescribe allergy medication through pills, eye drops or even allergy injections. This could make a big difference in your red eyes. In fact, they could even become a thing of the past.

These are 7 things you can do to cure your red eyes. Do you suffer from red eyes due to allergies? What have you found helps this problem?
