1. Moisturize Beforehand

You want your skin to be healthy before you apply product to it. That's why you should moisturize and exfoliate to get rid of any dead skin lingering on you. Once you take care of that, then you can move on to applying the product.

2. Wear Latex Gloves to Protect Your Hands

Make sure that you put on latex gloves before you begin the process. If you forget to do this, then your hands will be covered with way too much product. Since you don't want to feel gross when you're trying to make yourself look gorgeous, you should keep your hands covered while applying the product to the rest of your body.

3. Apply Vaseline to Your Eyebrows and Hair Line

To keep yourself safe, it's a good idea to put vaseline on your eyebrows and hair line. That way, you won't end up accidentally getting the product in the wrong spots. Of course, you should also be extra careful to avoid getting it in your mouth or eyes, unless you want to visit a doctor sometime soon.

4. Try out a Test Patch

When you buy your tanning product, it should only be a tiny bit darker than your actual skin tone. But since you can't believe everything you read, you should pick a small spot on your body and apply a test patch. That way, you can make sure that the product contains the color that you actually want. If it doesn't, then only a small portion of your body will be affected, so it won't cause any tears.

5. Have Someone around to Help You

If you live with your parents, boyfriend, or a roommate, make sure they're home when you apply your fake tan. It's difficult to reach every inch of your body, especially your back, so it's a great idea to have a helpful hand nearby. They can also assure that you didn't miss a spot you thought you had covered.

6. Let Your Skin Dry before Getting Changed

Once you're all finished applying the product, wait a little while before putting your clothes on. You don't want to ruin your favorite outfit or end up wiping off the tan you just finished creating. Wait until your body is completely dry to get dressed.

7. Avoid Wearing Tight Clothes at First

When your tan is dry enough to get dressed, make sure that you avoid wearing tight clothing. If you do, then it could end up making your tan look patchy. It's better to be safe than sorry, so try wearing something loose until the day is done.

If you don't trust yourself to create a fabulous fake tan, you can always see a professional about getting a spray-on tan. Do whatever you're the most comfortable with, because you don't want to spend your entire summer upset. What other tips do you have for creating a great fake tan?

What types of product? Which self tanners are the best?

Xentan and St tropez mousse are great.

Bad tips... Hahah never moisturize before applying tan, moisturize and exfoliate the week before applying it. Then only apply lotion to your hands, knees, elbows, and feet in order to help not get creases/streaks. Apply with a proper tanning mitt to get an even coverage. I've been using Million Dollar Tan and I love it, look it up on YouTube, Carli Bybel is the one who introduced me to it and I love her for it!
