Aren't we all looking for ways to get rid of a pimple fast? I've suffered from acne at various times in my life and compiled a mental go-to list of tips on getting rid of acne that I always revert back to when I find my acne acting up. Most of my triggers come from stress or a food sensitivity. For years I had no idea foods I was allergic and addicted to were affecting my acne. I found out by clogging my digestive system, I was also clogging my face. I didn't know that the foods I was eating were greatly affecting my blood sugar, which affected my stress levels, which directly affected my face. Read on to find major culprits of acne you may not know about, and find out my tips for getting rid of acne.

1. Avoid Too Much Vitamin C

One of my best answers for how to get rid of pimples fast is to not overdose on vitamin C. Many of us pop a supplement to prevent a cold or eat too many citrus foods or foods like tomatoes and strawberries, which are very high in vitamin C. All vegetables and fruits with vitamin C are extremely healthy, but they can lead to acne. Orange juice is also a major culprit. I, unfortunately, react to strawberries, tomatoes and oranges, to be specific. I also can't take a supplement or my face looks like a connect-the-dots puzzle. Get your daily dose of vitamin C in small amounts and notice, when you eat certain foods if you react the next morning.

2. Ditch the Dairy

Yes, dairy is a health food in its natural form, but even if you don't have an allergy, you should know it is one of your skin's worst enemies. Even organic dairy is full of natural estrogen from cows. This estrogen causes breakouts on your skin and greatly affects your hormone levels. Fluctuations in hormone levels will lead to breakouts in no time. Dairy is also mucus-forming and acidic. Foods that are mucus-forming not only clog the internal organs but also your skin. Waste gets stored in your cells and your skin tries to eliminate the toxins through your pores. Acidic foods such as dairy are also hard for your body to process.

This stress creates an internal nightmare which can lead to acne. A clear face is a sign of good digestion and that things are flowing smoothly along inside. A clean diet will help your body naturally cleanse itself out, but dairy gets in the way of that process. Yoga can help with these issues to stimulate flow and lower stress, but for best results dairy needs to be completely avoided and out of your system if acne or inflammation is an issue. Try delicious dairy-free alternatives like almond and coconut based milk. They are creamy, much like real dairy, and won't clog your pores.

3. Clean Your Makeup Brushes

I like to wash my makeup brushes once a week in baby shampoo and it turns out that this one of the best natural ways to get rid of pimples fast. I just place the bristles of each brush into a jar with a small amount of shampoo and fill the jar with warm water to soak overnight. This is an excellent and gentle way to clean your brushes and clarify them again. If you do not wash your brushes, bacteria builds up on them from constant contact with your skin and cosmetic products. This leads to fungus on the brushes, which wind up on your face in the form of breakouts, so clean your brushes regularly. After you wash them, blot them with a paper towel and let them air dry for at least 2-3 hours. I like to do this on the weekends when I have some spare time.

4. Ditch the Sugar

Most of us have a seriously hard time giving up our favorite sweets. I know I sure did. There just wasn't anything like my favorite cookies or milkshakes. I had terrible acne when I ate sugary foods. When I began to clean up my diet, I noticed my face never looked better. I realized that sugar was toxic to my skin, wreaked havoc on my blood sugar levels and my hormones, and also created an acidic state in my body. Acidity is the direct cause of inflammation, so when skin is inflamed it is smart to clean up your diet with fresh, leafy green vegetables, smoothies and juices. Emphasize low-sugar fruits like berries, kiwis, apples and pears as well, to avoid a rise in blood sugar. Eliminating sugar is one of the best ways to get rid of a pimple fast.

5. Say No to Energy Drinks

Energy drinks are all the rage, but with caffeine, sugar and tons of artificial chemicals and flavorings, you're basically drinking a chemical experiment, not a beverage. When you drink or eat chemically processed foods and beverages, your body has to try to make some sense of them. When it determines they are pretty much garbage, your hormones go out of whack, your digestive system can become clogged, and inflammation goes up. These are all triggers of acne. Remember, a clear face is a clear body. Drink one cup of regular coffee or green tea instead, if you really need an energy boost from caffeine, or better yet, try a cup of herbal tea instead. These will give you an energy boost without the crash that energy drinks tend to give.

6. Lower Your Salt Intake

Another of the best natural ways to get rid of acne is to watch how much salt you eat. Flushing out the skin is about flushing out your system, so eat foods that are low in salt naturally and don't add salt to your meals. This will help relieve fluids in your body and make your skin appear more moisturized and hydrated. It also unclogs your pores naturally to relieve acne.

7. Avoid Night Creams

Depending on what age you are, you may not need the heavy night cream you insist on wearing. I personally find most to break me out, so I use a simple moisturizing sunscreen that actually clears my skin instead of breaking it out. Avoid putting heavy oils on your face, along with night creams. While you need a light moisturizer, be aware that many can break you out, so find which ones work best for you. In my experience, I find safe brands to be Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Garnier that all come with a reasonable price tag.

8. Eat and Drink Clean

Making changes to your diet is one of the best ways to control acne. Get rid of processed foods, dairy, anything packaged and eat really clean the next week. You'll most likely notice a dramatic improvement on your skin. I find that foods rich in orange hues, such as sweet potatoes, butternut squash, canned pumpkin, papaya and carrots, to be miracle workers for acne. These foods contain vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. This nutrient is acne's worst nightmare. When my face looks really bad, I'll eat a few of these foods each day and my acne is gone in no time. Oily fish, almonds, spinach and cucumbers are also excellent foods for clear skin. Drink lots of water, fresh pressed vegetable juices and whole food smoothies. You'll notice glowing skin in no time. You'll love clean eating!

I'm a firm believer that the best tips for getting rid of acne come from our nutrition habits, not from buying pricey anti-acne products. I used to spend so much money on the latest so-called, "acne-cure" product, especially if a celebrity endorsed it. Oh, how gullible I was! Now, I know better. Simple is usually best, in the case of getting rid of acne, these 8 simple tips are definitely the way to go. Do you have any tips on getting rid of acne?

Is this for all ages of acne? Cause I'm a young teen. Will this work for me?

I think drinking water is the best way cuz for a while a stayed super hydrated and had clear skin but recently I haven't drank as much water and now my canes back!! :(

I resorted to multiple acne "cures" when changing my diet wasnt working 100%... I was my face in the shower in the morning with a blackhead scrub, and at night with an automated brush with an acne wash. I moisturize the dry parts of my face and put an acne cream on the oily parts (ahh the wonders of combination skin)... I think if i change my diet thisll clear my acne 100%

My breakouts before were mainly due to my diet (I eat a lot of junk food). When I start eliminating them, I can see changes in my skin.

I'm in the 7th grade and it seems like I'm the only girl in my school that has acne. I don't have BAD acne anymore. But now I have a couple of acne scars. The the beginning of the year a group of boys would call me pizza face, connect the dots, and strawberry face. I then tried covering my face with makeup. And they found out so they then called me crayola face. I cleared up my face. So they stopped making fun of my acne. But then they called me and still do call me zombie. Ugh! I would cry myself to sleep. What I'm saying is you're still beautiful even though you may have a few or many pimples/zits in your face. I cleared up my skin. I ignored those bullies.

Drinking lots of water is my cure for acne :). It flushes out any toxins and leaves my skin clear and hydrated.
