7 Ways Your Beauty Routine Changes when You Have a Baby ...

Eliza

I have three kids and I guarantee that once those little ones worm their way into your heart, your beauty routine will change. After all, priorities tend to shift when you become a mother. Don’t worry – I’m not suggesting that you give up on your looks. Nearly 12 years into motherhood, I still do my hair and wear make-up nearly every single day. However, the way I do those things has changed dramatically since I was on my own and only in charge of myself. Here’s what you can expect.

Pick up the Pace and Slap on That Make-up

Sorry, the time for drawn out smoky eye experimentation or a home blowout has gone. Now, you are going to have to race through your beauty routine because that baby isn’t going to sleep all morning and a toddler isn’t a fan of giving you any time to yourself. Practice getting your routine done quickly so that you can look the way you want in just a few minutes. I promise – it gets easier!

2

Pare Things down Because You Will Be Short on Time

Take advantage of your nesting phase by paring down your beauty product cache. Get rid of things you don’t use, things that have expired and things that you bought for one purpose and forgot you owned. Once you have your stash narrowed down, you’ll see that you can achieve the look you want without all the bells and whistles.

3

Learning to Multitask Will Be Your Best New Skill

I can’t even tell you the things I learned to do with one hand while holding a baby in the other. Painting my nails and loading the dishwasher come to mind. You’ll also learn that multitasking is your best friend. Look for products that do double duty and you can cut down on your routine while still getting it done. Look for creams that can be eyeshadow and blush. Try a gloss/lipstick in one product. Life will just be easier.

4

Understand That Skincare Will Never Be the Same

Pregnancy and new motherhood will change your skin. Mine was luminous and glowing until that little one was born, then I had breakouts and dullness that made me want to cry. Expect those skincare changes so you can tackle them appropriately. Be vigilant with cleansing to keep pimples at bay. Also, your skin thins as you age, so use a product that’s designed for mature skin.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

My kids have gone all soft from time to time and told me I’m beautiful. It’s usually when I’m tucking them in bed at night and have already washed off my make-up. No, I would never skip my routine, but these tiny creatures can really make you feel beautiful, which will naturally change the way you see yourself. There’s nothing like a tiny toddler sighing and whispering that you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen to make you feel like the best looking creature on the planet.

Pay Attention to Your Hair after Your Baby is Born

Just like pregnancy can change your skin, it can also wreak havoc on your hair. It will probably be full and lustrous until shortly after delivery. Once your hormones adjust, your hair will probably fall out and start looking dull. Fight back by using volumizing products and doing a hydrating mask once a week or so.

You’ll Want to Try New Things Because That’s the Way It is

After each of my babies was born, I was hit with this weird feeling that I needed to change my entire look. I got a haircut and tried new make-up. Of course, I didn’t have much time, but I used what I had to give myself a makeover that made me feel womanly and not just for my milk making prowess. Be ready for the need to overhaul your entire beauty routine. It’s fun!

I get up before the kids. That way I can do anything I want. I shower, do my face and hair, pay bills, do laundry, make lunches or just read a book!
