7 Worst Makeup Packaging Ever ...

Have you ever picked up a beauty product that you ended up loving only to discover that it has the worst makeup packaging ever?! I can think of quite a few products that I have where I just could not figure out how the brand came up with its crazy containers! There are lots of beauty brands out there who try to think outside the box with innovative packaging only for it to be a big fat fail! Check out my list of the worst beauty packaging and see if you agree.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows

Urban Decay Book of Shadows If you’ve ever used one of the volumes of the UD Book of Shadows then I think you’ll concur that it has one of worst makeup packaging ever! I get that it’s designed to look like a pop-up book and all, and I appreciate the creative design but come on! How useful is the paper pop-ups in real life and what does it do besides get in the way? I’d much rather have bigger eye shadow pots spread out than how it's currently packaged and set up.

The Balm Hot Mama Shadow/Blush

The Balm Hot Mama Shadow/Blush Another bad packaging idea comes to us from the Balm with Hot Mama. I love the shade and the packaging is cute, but I hate that it goes in a little sleeve! I’ve left the blush in my makeup bag without the sleeve and it was a mess! I’m often in a hurry when I put on makeup so I don’t always remember to put it away the way it was meant to be, so many times hot mama becomes a hot mess!

Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 PA+++

Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 PA+++ Talk about bad cosmetic packaging! Dr. Jart+’s BB cream comes in a tube with a pump so it’s pretty much impossible to take anywhere without some of the product coming out and getting on your things! I love that the product has high SPF and that it’s a treatment serum and moisturizer in one, but they need to seriously reconsider the design. Why not have a tube with a screw-on cap like normal BB creams or offer us a cap with the pump?!

Stila Lip Glaze

Stila Lip Glaze When I was first introduced to these pen containers from Stila I thought it was the coolest thing until I tried it and realized that it too had bad cosmetic packaging. I must say, it’s a pretty rad idea to be able to click the pen to get the product out and then simply brush on the color. However, I always ended up with way too much product and ended up wasting the little gloss that came in the container.

UPD:

The Stila Lip Glaze appears to be quite innovative with its clickable pen design - a true nod to convenience. But the glamour fades as soon as you realize the quantity it dispenses is simply too much for a single application. It's frustrating to watch the excess gloss being wiped away, especially when you're someone who hates to waste. Aside from the issue of control, the sheer anticipation of the *click, click, and too much gloss scenario can make anyone apprehensive. The idea had potential; if only the execution matched it.

Urban Decay Primer Potion

Urban Decay Primer Potion I swear I’m not picking on Urban Decay, but there’s a reason that two of their products made this list of worst makeup packaging! The original UDPP came in a plastic genie bottle container with an applicator; yup I’m bringing up old stuff. Lots of ladies loved the formula but hated that you could never use up all of the product since it was in a “bottle.” It was a novel idea but it left us feeling like we were duped!

Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer Treatment

Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer Treatment I have no grumbles about the product itself and the outer appearance of this concealer looked promising, but it’s just another bad packaging idea. I think it made a whole lot of sense on paper to have a concealer where you can control the amount of product that comes out, similar to the Stila Lip Glaze. However, the sponge applicator has had really mixed reviews. First, it's a little unsanitary and some say it’s too hard and harsh while others find it too flimsy and it falls apart too easily.

Make up for Ever Diamond Powder

Make up for Ever Diamond Powder Yikes, loose powders and pigment usually make for a mess but this diamond powder is another example of the worst makeup packaging. Anything loose is tricky but this little container with five holes that distribute the product makes it hard to control the amount that comes out and spills on you and your counter. I would much rather use the containers for their glitters which only has three holes and result in much less mess!

Have you had any run-ins with beauty products that had the worst makeup packaging? I know makeup brands want to make their products stand out by creating new and unique packaging but I really don’t want to give up convenience and ease of use for a wildly different package! What do you think, if you loved the makeup would you mind awkward or bad packaging? What beauty product do you think has bad packaging?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Laura Geller's products are the best and cannot live without, but the packaging is cheap and break easily. Big containers and small ones are all the same....they broke after a few times opening the lids.

The Guerlain Mascara in the top photo has one of the trickiest packagings! I've been using it for a few months and still can not get used to it. It's too heavy, difficult to close and I never use the mirrors, and as per product, it is as mediocre as any other mascara. Thank god it was a gifts, the price is outrageous! But you will not believe how all sales people rave about it (must have smth to do with the commission on this overpriced product).

Is there anyway I could start making articles? I love these! I actually have owned the age rewind stick thing. Broke easily and still had plenty left in the little bottle.

When there are too many holes making a mess of pigments and loose powders I sometimes tape over a few holes which makes the amount spilling out a lot eaasier to manage. :-) That was originally a tip from my hairdresser talking about Osis Dust it powder.

You forgot to mention Revlon's Colorstay foundation which must have one of the worst packagings ever! :)

I totally agree about the urban decay book of shadows. I have that palette and the bulky book-like packaging is a hassle. I also have the old version of the primer potion because it's what came with my naked 1 palette. I think UD listened to their customer feedback and started making the squeeze-tube version.
