DIY Tinted Beet Lip Gloss and Blush

This next DIY beauty product is about as natural as it gets! All you need for luscious ruby-tinted lips are beets, olive oil and powdered sugar. Strawberries and pomegranates will also work but it’ll require more fruit for the same color payoff as a beet.
Ingredients:
1 beet

Chop your beet up into pieces and heat it. I put mine in the microwave for 40 seconds. The heat brings the red juice out. Once the mixture has been made, use a lipstick brush to brush it onto your lips. You can also use a makeup sponge to add color to your cheeks with this mixture.

DIY Bath Bombs

Here’s a fun DIY natural beauty product that you can make for yourself and your friends! Why buy expensive bath bombs when you can make your very own at home?!
Ingredients:
Dry Ingredients:
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid (do not substitute ascorbic acid)
1/2 cup corn starch
1/3 cup Epsom salts or coarse sea salt
Wet Ingredients:
2 1/2 tablespoons sunflower or other light oil (like sweet almond oil)
3/4 tablespoon water or rosewater (be careful not to start the fizzing action by adding too much water)
1/4 – 1 teaspoon essential oils
1/4 teaspoon borax as an emulsifier
Vegetable or other natural colorant (optional)
Directions:
Sieve the dry ingredients together until they are well blended. Measure and combine all the wet ingredients and borax in a clean jar. Cover tightly and shake vigorously. Slowly drizzle the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, gently stirring to prevent the reaction from starting. Make sure you mix in all of the wet ingredients. Afterward, you’ll find that the mixture is dry and crumbly and has to be packed in the molds quite firmly to keep shape. The mixture should just start to hold together when pressed in your hand, like slightly moist fine sand. You can unmold the bombs after 30 minutes, and let them dry for a few days before using them. Store them in a dry place.

Coconut Oil Scalp Treatment

We can’t neglect our scalps while we’re making all these other DIY beauty products! This next scalp treatment can moisturize and help get rid of flakes!
Ingredients:
Scalp treatment bristle brush – natural is best, but all I could find at Sally’s was a nylon brush. They have a rounded top at the bristles making it easier to roll over the scalp, but even a regular bristle brush can do the job.
Application brush or cotton balls
4 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon grapefruit juice
Directions:
Mix 4 tablespoons coconut oil with 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1 tablespoon grapefruit juice. ou’ll start on dry hair, and it really makes no difference if it is clean or not. Starting on top, place the brush on the scalp, rotate it across the scalp while pressing down and pull off in the end. Repeat across the scalp, parting hair where necessary. This will stimulate the blood circulation and loosen any dry skin scales. This should feel good, don’t press so hard that it hurts.

Next part the hair down the center and apply the oil mixture to the scalp with the application brush or cotton ball. Work in one inch sections down the sides of the head, then the back making sure the mixture covers the entire scalp.

Now give your scalp (or your friends) a good massage. Rub with your fingertips in a circular motion all over the scalp. Leave the treatment on for about 20 minutes.
Finish it off with a good shampoo and conditioner.

DIY Hair Remover

Hair growth is a naturally occurring phenomenon so personally I think hair removers should be free-but I digress. Whip up this simple and cheap at-home beauty treatment for sexy, fuzz-free legs!
Ingredients:
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of honey
1 ounce of lemon juice
A drizzle of molasses (optional)
Cotton fabric strips (we used an old bed sheet) 3 in. x 10 in.
Popsicle stick or butter knife
Directions:
In a microwave safe bowl, mix all the ingredients together. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Carefully remove from microwave - it will be HOT! Stir the mix. If it is a smooth consistency it is ready to use. If the sugar hasn't dissolved completely, microwave for additional 30 seconds until it has. Let the sugar cool off until it is still hot, but cool enough to put on your skin. Please don't burn yourself!!

Make sure the area you are going to wax is clean and dry. Now, using your Popsicle stick spread a very thin layer down your leg in the direction of the hair growth. Press your strip of into the sugar. Rub several times.

Pull your skin taught. Grip the strip from the bottom. Quickly pull upwards (opposite of the direction that the hair grows). Repeat on the rest of your leg. Just don't repeat on the same patch of skin. Then admire your smooth leg. Make sure you moisturize your skin after you wax. We did find that it took a little practice getting this technique down, but once we did we found it worked really well. The wax cleans up easily with a little water. The extra wax will keep for a long time. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Homemade Natural Deodorant

Another natural beauty product that you can easily make at home is deodorant. Avoid any weird chemicals from the store-bought kind and save some dough with this safe and easy recipe!
Ingredients:
5-6 Tbsp Coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch
Directions:
Combine equal portions of baking soda & arrowroot powder. Then slowly add coconut oil and work it in with a spoon until it maintains the substance you desire. It should be about the same texture as the store bought kind, solid but able to be applied easily. You can either scoop this into your old dispensers or place in a small container with lid and apply with fingers with each use. After applying the product, you can just rub the remains into your hands as a lotion! This recipe lasts about 3 months for two people with regular daily use.

Make Your Own Solid Perfume

DIY beauty products aren’t just about makeup and skin care, we can make our very own solid perfume too! This recipe takes a little more time but worth the effort to say you made your own signature scent!
Ingredients:
Olive Oil (don’t use expensive olive oil for this. Use the cheapest Extra Virgin Olive Oil you can find. EVOO, if you’re a Rachel Ray fan…) or Sweet Almond Oil
Beeswax
Essential Oils
Bamboo skewer or chopstick for stirring
Clean tin can or glass measuring cup (you can still use the cup in the kitchen after you make this)
Small pot or pan
Small container to pour finished perfume into. Some ideas: a used, clean chapstick tube, little watchmaker tins (craft stores and seed catalogs sell them). You could also use the plastic tops to milk jugs or soda bottles — they won’t have covers, though, so you wouldn’t be able to have them with you on the go. Whatever works.
Directions:
Add one tablespoon of olive oil and about 3/4 tablespoon (the original recipe I found said to add equal amounts of both oil and beeswax, but it ended up seeming a little too firm to me. Add more beeswax if yours seems like it’s not thick enough.) of beeswax to your can or glass measuring cup.

Place the can or cup into a pot that has about an inch of water in the bottom, and place it on the stove on medium-high heat. Once the water starts to boil, the wax will melt pretty quickly. Stir it every once in a while.

Once everything is melted, remove it from the heat and add your essential oils. Between 5 and 15 drops of your chosen oils is about right, depending on how strong you want your perfume to be. You can go with single-note scents such as lavender, patchouli, orange, sandalwood, or rose, or you can do combinations. I’ve done a patchouli perfume with just a hint of sweet orange oil, and a lavender/vanilla combo that turned out to be one of my favorites. For more ideas on scent combinations, check out this article (they have instructions for making alcohol-based perfumes, but the essential oil combos they use should give you a few ideas.)

Stir the essential oils in well, and carefully pour your perfume into your container of choice. Let it sit and harden for at least 30 minutes, and it’s ready to use.

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Awesome article!!!

Awesome idea for Christmas baskets or stocking stuffers!

DO NOT DO #16, DIY Pore Strips. There was NO way for me to get it off of my face except for exfoliating TWICE, which made my skin even more red and blotchy. And the next morning, everything looked like it was before, pores looked the exact same. Seems good in theory, but was an extreme pain.

A note in #16: I tried this (found from another site.) It actually does work! The trick is to apply it way thicker than you think you need, and that yes, it'll probably hurt a bit. After, treat your face with a cool cloth or anything else you like to reduce redness. It really was crazy how my h crud came out of my face when I thought it was pretty clean!
