I’m pretty much obsessed with beauty and love discovering new and better ways to do things. That being said, I think we can all agree that while there are tons of awesome beauty tips out there, there are also plenty of total beauty tip fails. Some beauty tips just don’t work and then there are some that can actually do some damage. Scary, right? Obviously, we want to avoid doing any harmful beauty habits at all costs so I decided to do some digging to see what tips are actually worth doing. Keep on scrolling to see what I found out!
1. Misusing Your Eyelash Curler
Eyelash curlers are one of the most underrated beauty tools. They can instantly make you look more awake, really open up your eyes, and make them appear larger. They truly are a must-have in your beauty arsenal. However, as much as they’re useful, they’re also often misused. Have you ever lined your eyes before you curled your lashes? What about applying mascara and then curling your lashes afterward? I’m guilty of doing both and I can tell you that both habits are no-nos. Applying liner before curling your lashes will just undo all of your hard work because the liner will come off on the curler. And I think we all know that curling lashes coated in mascara can damage or break our delicate eyelashes. Time to switch up the way we do things!
2. Buffing Your Nails
If you do your own nails then you might have gotten into the habit of buffing your nails. Buffing prevents peeling, increasing circulation, files down any ridges in your nails, and leaves a nice shine. It might seem like buffing is a good beauty habit to get into but in most cases, our nails really don’t need the extra attention in our day-to-day lives. Also, too much buffing can thin out your nails which are not only painful but can cause friction and build heat. Keep your nail care routine simple by moisturizing, pushing back to the cuticle, filing, and trimming.
3. Exfoliating Too Often
Read any article on skin care and you’ll read about how important exfoliating your skin is. Exfoliating has tons of benefits and it feels great but you’ll definitely want to keep it to a minimum. If you get in the habit of exfoliating every time you cleanse, you’ll definitely end up doing more harm than good. Over-exfoliating can cause tiny tears in your skin which can dry out and irritate your delicate skin and make skin more vulnerable to the environment. Exfoliate once or twice a week max depending on how sensitive your skin is.
4. Using Facial Wipes Instead of Cleanser
Facial wipes are a lifesaver for those times we don’t have access to our regular cleanser, traveling, or just too exhausted to wash our face. Other than that, being too dependent on your trusty facial wipes might not be the best idea. Most facial wipes require rinsing after you use them because they use a chemical cleanser. Since we typically don’t rinse after we use the wipes, they can be drying or irritating to the skin when used on sensitive skin or used consistently. Also, I find that most facial wipes don’t remove all traces of makeup so I have to end up washing my face again anyway.
5. Using Too Many Products at Once
I can totally relate to the excitement that comes with trying a new beauty product but if we want to see results it’s best to avoid piling on too many products or switching products too often. Your skin goes through an adjustment period and it can take up to a month before you see results with a new product. If you switch products before a month is up, you won’t really know if it works or not. As for layering too many products, your skin likely isn’t absorbing all the products so it ends up being a waste. If you have different skin care concerns that can’t be addressed with a few products, alternate them so you get a little of each.
6. Not Paying Attention to Ingredients
If you’ve ever taken a look at the list of ingredients in a skin care or beauty product, you know how complex it can be. The list is filled with words you’ve never heard of let alone pronounced so I get how overwhelming it is. However, it’s important to pay attention to what’s in your products so you avoid any damaging ingredients. You don’t have to become a walking dictionary but there are definitely a few terms to get to know. For example, parabens, sulfates, and phthalates are things you most definitely want to avoid in your beauty products. Alcohol is another common ingredient in skin care that you want to avoid. Toners, cleansers, and body washes often contain alcohol which can dry out and irritate skin.
7. Loading up on Moisturizer
This is a bad beauty habit that I’m totally guilty of. My face has dry patches and I pile on face oil like you wouldn’t believe. I just feel better when I can feel some sort of product on my dry cheeks but little did I know this was harmful! According to plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, excessively moisturizing oily skin can lead to breakouts and even premature aging. Applying too much moisturizer also prevents your skin from creating its natural oils since it’s getting it from your moisturizer. Dr. Cecilia Wong says that some signs of overusing moisturizer include clogged pores, overproduction of oil, breakouts, and bumps.
